Delighted to be talking about our relationship with 'weeds' tonight Kew Gardens: can horticulture and lanscaping embrace wild plants? 🌿

Many years ago my dad put casters on a couple of old office cabinets.
They’re must have clocked up some miles!

Plants can often survive and flower on pavements well into winter, due to the heat brought by concrete and walls. This can make them extra interesting to insects, as late nectar sources. 🐝 The ever popular 'pavement tomato' is no exception!

A surprise for today's with what I think is Nemesia 'Easter Bonnet' growing as a pavememt plant in Heaton. A break from the norm! πŸŒ±πŸ”Ž

Love or hate weeds, they are part of urban nature, constantly evolving & worth studying. 🌱 Hawksbeard (Crepis) for example, has adapted to habitat fragmentation in cities (patches of green) by increasing its dispersal ability...potentially making it more difficult to 'control'!

Apologies to anyone who had a ticket for my KMIS talk at Kew Gardens yesterday. Unfortunately, COVID got the best of me for the 2nd time. Hope we can reschedule! 🀞

A decent candidate for weed of the week! Borage (Borago officinalis) complete with attached wet wipe growing in the pavement by my local garage.

In all seriousness, think I'm gonna make a thing...πŸŒ±πŸ”Ž

Helen's realistic paintings of pavements showcase those tiny, overlooked plants and really make us think about the way we value urban nature. 🌱

It’s and I spotted this Gallant Soldier (Galinsoga parviflora) on the pavement this afternoon - never seen it here before. Near the railway line to Kew where it first escaped in the 1860s. (Hairy enough to be shaggy soldier possibly).

Australian Harebell Isotoma axillaris new for Norfolk this week. Three plants in pavement cracks. Interesting spiky leaves & exotic looking flowers. Thanks Enid Barrie for sharing the find

Delighted to be in Portugal today - a country where glyphosate is still widely used - to spread the message, talking to local authority representatives about alternative ways to manage (and accept!) urban plants. 🌱

White ramping fumitory, Fumaria capreolata.

I wonder, if they were as vigorous as Corydalis would they be as popular.
