The typical U.S. taxpayer paid $1,759 for defense contractors — and $110 for the Child Tax Credit.

'Lifting kids out of poverty can have lifelong effects,' says National Priorities Project researcher Lindsay Koshgarian. 'Isn’t that worth more than a fraction of our military contracts?'

An extra $95,000,000,000 for war and related spending on top of the Pentagon's budget for this year at $886,000,000,000.

We could use that money to seriously consider long-term solutions to peace and safety, including the climate crisis.

In the last year, the average U.S. taxpayer paid $1,748 to weapons contractors like Lockheed Martin.

Much of that sum, points out William Hartung in The Hill, is 'wasted on cost overruns and performance problems, and, in some cases, outright fraud.' thehill.com/opinion/459419…

This month, National Priorities Project calculated that the average U.S. taxpayer contributed more than $3,700 for the Pentagon and war for 2023, but only $11 for renewable energy and energy efficiency.

What could it look like if we switched these priorities?

Global military spending has reached 2.4 trillion, increased a 39.4% in the last 10 years, and doubled since 2001 (1.2 t $), when the 'War on Terror'' started.
The upward trend is clear, despite how enemies (and excuses) have changed during this time.

This past weekend, the House passed $95 billion in war and related spending. This $95 billion could have provided 9.6 million low-income adults AND 16.5 million low-income kids with healthcare.

We need to move past an increasingly militarized world and shift to a peaceful one.

Over a third of your tax bill is funding weapons and war - averaging more than $5,000 from every U.S. taxpayer. As the headlines over the past week (and beyond) suggest, this militarized mindsight creates dangerous results.
