Although counter-speech was mostly ineffective in alleviating these negative outcomes, the study on racist hate speech revealed that for milder forms of online hate, counter-speech by a majority member successfully alleviated perceived identity threat among targets. (4/4)

We found that more severe hate speech increased the perceived identity threat & sense of negative representation among victims, which was in turn related to greater intentions to avoid the majority group and/or derogate it. These results were consistent across both studies. (3/4)

Via 2 experiments, we unraveled the role of severity and counter-speech in hate speech toward minority members of the LGBTQIA+ & Black communities. In our study, we conceptualized online hate as a social identity threat which may detrimentally impact intergroup relations. (2/4)
