Almost 5 years ago the Obama CTO's office brought together CJ, health & data experts from 26 states & asked them to identify their biggest challenge. The answer? People struggling with mental illness & addiction who needed treatment instead of jail.

In fact, we updated the DDJ playbook to help! So grateful to so many folks who helped build DDJ - I miss the CTO JEDI crew. And thank you to John Arnold for taking a chance on an early stage venture!

What did we learn? Johnson County, Iowa used DDJ data to successfully advocate for a sobering center as an arrest alternative & to connect people to permanent supportive housing. In just 9 months, the permanent supportive housing program prevented 235 nights in jail.

In Middlesex, MA, Middlesex Sheriff found that 2% of the population made up 13-15% of police contacts & that mental health clinicians helped divert people from jail. The data is helping shape plans for a new crisis diversion facility.

The next gov tech failure is already happening. Sadly, expect more if we don’t have technologists, designers, and data scientists at the table early in the process— technologyreview.com/2021/01/30/101…

25% of police killings are people w/mental illness. A purely public health response to mental health crisis & drug overdose is a viable solution. started to tackle this in 2016. Lots more to do.

8. Establish non-police alternatives to 911 calls involving people with mental illness. For example, 1 in 5 of the 911 calls in Eugene, OR are diverted to mental health first responders instead of police to respond. A success being scaled in Portland. wsj.com/articles/when-…

7. Invest in alternatives to police as crime prevention strategies. Every 10 additional organizations in a city:

- Reduces the murder rate by 9%
- Reduces violent crime rate by 6%
- Reduces property crime rate by 4%
