After 36 years in prison, Dwayne received his second chance. Before his incarceration he was a decorated Army veteran. During his time at Angola, he worked at the tag plant for more than 30 years and trained hundreds of men to use industrial equipment.

It is great sadness that we learned of Leon’s passing last night due to complications from heart surgery. He had six months of freedom after 60 years of incarceration.

Today marks 5 years of freedom for Christi Cheramie. Sentenced to life in prison at 16, she makes the most of her second chance. She’s a role model, a homeowner, and a difference maker in her community. Christi is proof that Louisiana’s justice reforms are working.

After 20 years in prison, Vernon received his second chance. While incarcerated, he served as an academic tutor and a mentor to his peers. Now that he is home, he is committed to using those skills to give back to his community.

Those whose sentences were commuted represent a fraction of state’s 4,000+ lifers. Most were in prison 3 or 4 decades or more & records indicate clear evidence of remorse & rehabilitation. They were thoroughly vetted by an open, public process & have proven worthy of a 2nd chance

Another 10/6 lifer is home. After 54 years in prison, Claude received his freedom. When he arrived at Angola in 1969, the road leading to the front gate was unpaved. Earlier today he left the prison going the opposite direction on a road he wondered if he’d ever travel again.
