Another wonderful event at St Christopher's CARE! 🌞This time about palliative care and learning disability. Andrea Bruun gave a talk about our project - and our toolkit already had an impact! Thank you Sue Marsden 💙, phoebe mooney, and Emma for the invite and a great day

- adaptations to home to enable somebody to stay there (moving to ground floor/additional care)
- skills to break bad news and support discussion of end of life care

It’s been super fun to work with a fantastic group using arts based methods to help co-produce our next easy read ‘planning ahead’ booklet 🙌🏾

How are we still seeing ‘learning disability’ / ‘Down’s syndrome’ for a reason on a DNACPR form
People do not die from having a learning disability

Death may occur as a consequence of co-occurring physical disorders and serious health events..a learning disability isn’t fatal

Learning disability annual health checks are still important if somebody has a life limiting diagnosis.
They help to find other health problems early & identify other possible unmet health needs

Use these books a lot in practice for people with learning disabilities & can’t recommend enough. The pictures tell the story of the death of a parent in a simple but moving way.
Helpful for pre and post bereavement

Today is

Out of every 100 people with a learning disability, around 22 also have epilepsy

At the end of life a person will need to have their usual anticonvulsant meds changed when the oral route is lost (e.g unable to swallow)

Something to be aware of 💭

All of us in the office were profoundly moved by Stuart’s story, who lived every moment of his life until he died - and had planned for this. Thank you to his team for sharing it and PCPLD Network for hosting today’s webinar. Missed it? Catch up here bit.ly/4bl5eiC
