Seconded. Amy Proal, PhD has been studying viral persistence as a driver of complex chronic disease for a long time — even in the face of skepticism from some. She’s a brilliant and empathetic scientist, and her persistence is paying off.

I know twitter has been buzzing today bc Dr. Monica M. Bertagnolli has unambiguously named viral persistence as a driver of LC pathobiology. I’m thrilled to see this too and I view it as an historic moment. However, today I’d like to do a little Amy Proal, PhD appreciation post 1/

The virus can persist and replicate long term in tissue reservoirs, not just at autopsy. This includes in the brain, GI tract and the lung, possibly for months even years. We need to develop new antivirals. NIH Director Bertagnolli MD 👇

Once you get past all the “it’s just a cold” bluster, it’s amazing to consider how many people who will tell you they still have a cough/ wheeze/ are taking an inhaler/ fatigue/ are “not back to normal” long after they’ve had Covid.

I know I’m not the only one who hears this.🤷🏽‍♂️

Glad to see Dr. Mao acknowledging the fact that Bartonella is very prevalent and often asymptomatic until the immune system is impaired due to a second infection (eg COVID, Lyme, etc.) Psych symptoms often improve w/ antimicrobial treatments.
