It may not sound terribly appealing if you’re not a fan but the documentary series we made about Robbie Williams premieres on Netflix tomorrow and is a compelling and sometimes harrowing journey through a remarkable life. I edited Ep03 and I’m very pleased with it.

First look at a documentary series I worked on for many months. Incredible archive material and a gripping story.

Camp de Thiaroye (Sembène ‘88)

African soldiers heading home from WWII grow restless in a Dakar transit camp.

Banned in France, this polemical film is long but gripping, brutal but drily witty.

Multiple plot lines are deftly interwoven in this astonishing epic.

Recommended.

Sans Soleil (Marker ‘82)

A freewheeling documentary about film, history and memory.

A travelogue of modern Japan interwoven with countless surreal digressions, this hugely influential film essay feels a little dated but has many extraordinary, dreamlike moments.

Monumental.

It occurs to me that I haven’t mentioned that “Meg 2: The Trench” is in cinemas now, a rare chance to see me do some acting.

Black Girl (Sembéne ‘66)

A Senegalese girl struggles to adjust to life as a maid in France.

Vivid and provocative study of racism and white privilege in post-colonial African relations. Shares some DNA with the New Wave but has a distinct, humane voice of its own.

Fascinating.

Cairo Station (Chahine, ‘58)

Behind the scenes at a busy station, a sexually-frustrated peddler slowly succumbs to violent fantasies.

A rich portrait of street life blends neo-realism and noir, feels radical and relevant. Great cast and photography recall Welles.

Recommended.

Wild Strawberries (Bergman ‘57)

While travelling to collect an award, an elderly doctor reflects on a life full of dread, doubt, guilt and loss.

Beneath the film’s benign surface, Bergman mines many disarming moments of tension and conflict,

A justifiably celebrated classic.

The Housemaid (Kim ‘60)

A composer’s family is shattered after he employs a maid.

Startling, brutal chamber piece, intense to the point of delirium, played at expressionist fever pitch from start to finish. Sex, murder, abortion, suicide!

An incredible one-of-a-kind original.
