Thanks to everyone who responded to this. I'd like to get a basic sense of the effect grammar has had.
Question: What impact has the teaching of formal grammar for SPAG had on the quality of pupils’ writing at age 11 in your school. Retweets welcome.

Wherever people try and do a Yorkshire accent, they put way too emphasis on the T' part, and leave a gap - but it should all flow, just like this πŸ‘

There's a chance I'm takin this too seriously, inthe 😳 😁

Controversial opinion: Primary school writing should be about developing a love for writing. A desire to write. It should be where creativity is celebrated and enjoyed. A lot of the SPaG stuff can wait.

Ros Wilson Year 6 writing feels so dry and prescriptive these days. It’s all about FANBOYS and meeting very specific targets. There seems to be very little joy in writing left. I’m more familiar with Year 2 than 6, but the NC criteria are so dry.

@suegollop Ros Wilson And as a side point, I did my Year 6 SATs and got a Level 5. It just wasn’t a focal point in that era of education.

Matt jessop lindsayjskinner Ed Fairfield Ros Wilson Wouldn't you do creative writing as well as theory? It's like saying parts of maths are not fun so why bother. Lots of people my age learned hardly any grammar, and struggle to learn languages for this reason. It opens up possibilities, much like algebra.

Richard Fias Matt jessop lindsayjskinner Ed Fairfield Ros Wilson In fact I'd say learning it intuitively and then going back to find out the technicalities is probably VASTLY easier for most. The odd individual will prefer it the other way around but most people are simply not overtly analytical in that fashion.
