I'm interrupting my vacation to bring you this review by
Thorben Janssen of in Action. The authors are Michael Simons, Mark Needham, and Michael Hunger 🇪🇺 🇺🇦 @[email protected]. They have done good work on this book, and the topic is an interesting one. Manning Publications

I am super grateful for the thoughtful review that Thorben Janssen wrote for our in Action book thorben-janssen.com/book-review-du…

Thorben is a long time friend of mine and we gave him a full discount on the book, not because I wanted a good review, but an honest one.

Thanks, mate.

Seems to be a sensible decision, especially given its enviable wide use.

Casual reminder, I am still alive, doing cool database and Java stuff, and posting cycling pictures, but not using this platform here a lot anymore.

While 1 & 2 can be solved with AI, it feels that it's possible without AI, and number 3 is where AI fails completely. So, should we actually use AI for generating tests? Perhaps, we should rather think about how to get things done without heating the planet 🤷

I believe that I will be able to emulate these on PostgreSQL, HSQLDB, H2, BigQuery, possibly Oracle using ARRAY_AGG(), UNNEST, WITH ORDINALITY, so they become syntax sugar only.

Expect some improvements soon in jOOQ, too:

I recently read 'DuckDB in Action' by Michael Simons and Michael Hunger 🇪🇺 🇺🇦 @[email protected] , and I highly recommend it!
You'll learn about an interesting database, SQL's more complex features, and building data pipelines.

With generative AI on the horizon there has never been a better time to learn the fundamentals.

The amount of garbage that is about to be generated, checked in, and deployed is going to increase the value of those that actually understand how things work.

I've seen people take online rants about software way too personal / serious.

I mean, who can't relate? If a weird jOOQ bug costs you 3 hours of debugging, the least you're entitled to do is rant, I would say? Don't eat your anger. Let it out.

I'm learning and having so much fun with the challenge by Gunnar Morling 🌍 even without doing any coding.

It's particularly interesting to see the 'Java is slow' gang realizing how wrong they are and how cool and friendly is the Java performance community.

Finally, I had some time to sit and read, and learn something new! And it is completely new for me - DuckDB! I'm not a data scientist or analyst, I have never worked with big data or similar stuff.
