🐠 Fish are absolutely necessary for #CoralReef health. How do we know that? Study after study has documented the fish/coral connection. Here’s just one summary of that important relationship:

Today's #Barbie fish is another Anthiadinae (lots of pink fish in this subfamily), but this one is special. It's a yet to be described species of Odontanthias from #mesophotic central Pacific reefs. I photographed this one in Micronesia at about 140m depth. #ichthyology
Why do warmer waters have us worried about #CoralReefs ? Increased ocean temperatures can cause coral bleaching, a disruption of the relationship between the coral host and their microscopic algal symbionts that provide the coral with food!

Happy #WorldOceanDay ! Today we celebrate the ocean, which makes up 71% of Earth’s surface, but everyday we celebrate our #CoralReefs . While they only cover <1% of our world’s oceans, they provide habitat for >25% of our marine species! 🐠🦀🪸

Introducing Agaricia agaricites. Also known as the lettuce coral. Colonies of this species can grow in irregular, horizontal, large plates diving upright – resembling a fresh lettuce
