Security guards hired by UCLA retreated and hid inside a building last night as counter-protesters attacked a pro-Palestine encampment.

They refused to let anyone else inside, including UCLA student journalists covering the events, Daily Bruin reports:

Question for those of you out there, who have successfully navigated a mortgage: Is there a journalism outlet that you regularly went to for info? Or was it info from bank websites or elsewhere?

Every year Lena V. Groeger and I each teach a class, and getting to spend time with the Data Institute students is always one of the most inspiring and rewarding things I get to do.

The combo of @calmatters and The Markup will be a force to be reckoned with. This is the kind of new and innovating idea we need to do more of in journalism: calmatters.org/inside-the-new…

You might have heard some big news—we’re joining forces with CalMatters to supercharge the impact of our work.

And we’re doing it on a playing field where our journalism has been incredibly powerful: local. ❤️

Some BIG news from The Markup and CalMatters.

California will be an incredible testbed to ground The Markup's work, plus, the combo of investigative + public service means our journalism will build real, long-standing relationships with communities.

The Data Institute began because Sisi Wei & Lena V. Groeger saw an equity gap in training for data journalism. The intensive, free workshop has helped nearly 100 journalists since 2016, and this year’s program is July 8-19 in DC.

Apply by April 25! cjddatainstitute.org

We asked NYC Mayor Eric Adams why the city’s faulty chatbot is still live, giving people info that’s illegal.

Rather than answer our question, the administration techsplained @thecityny’s katie honan about product launches.

Let’s talk about it ⬇️

I'm late to the game, but I gotta say AWS's Athena is a truly mind-boggling piece of cloud computing.

The way it rips through absolutely massive SQL queries in seconds is blowing my mind.

Here are some of the Python tricks helping me explore its power gist.github.com/palewire/db35d…

NYC has added disclaimers to the AI chatbot as a result of our journalism, but why not take the bot down, add an initial fix, then release it again?

If NYC website text was telling people to break the law, I doubt that text would be allowed to stand as-is.

“It is our responsibility as journalists to make it obvious to you, our readers, what is going on in an image within the first one to two seconds of you seeing it.” - Sisi Wei. 100% agree. Smart piece, important convo for newsrooms. themarkup.org/hello-world/20…

Can bosses take workers' tips in NYC? NOPE.

But this NYC AI Chatbot —literally built to help NYC businesses — is saying you can take workers' tips.

As well as do a lot of other illegal things.

Check out this major Colin Lecher scoop. mrkup.org/nyc-chatbot

this is just lighting up everything in my brain / NYC has an algo transparency law btw, I am sure this isn't disclosed because barely anything is and that law did not prevent this harm

Me, as a reporter (waiting for edits): Hmm, I wonder what editors do all day.

Me, as an editor (in between trying to do five things at once): Oh God.

(It's been pretty fun but also hectic week!)
