I have no particular bone to pick with Anil Arora's career as Chief Statistician, but anyone who utters the phrase 'Canada's secret weapon is data' is courting some heavily deserved mockery.

It was bad enough to learn that Alec Cooper was retiring and that I would be joining the ranks of those without a family doctor.

It's so much worse to learn why.

This capital gains change piece by Trevor Tombe is really good. I’m slightly less bullish on the change (I do worry a bit what it’s going to mean for housing construction finance), but this is a really good primer to the economics of it.

I've been wracking my brains the past few days to think of an NGO/think tank that has done as much to move the needle on a political issue the way SP Institute (and in particular Dr. Mike P. Moffatt 🇨🇦🏅🏅) has on housing over the past 12-18 months, and I'm coming up blank. A huge achievement.

Stephen Gordon Carol Kroeger 🐀 Can’t find any English media spending 7 minutes in a factual discussion of the changes, although there was plenty of time available for opinionating without explaining.

This is such a great explainer of the changes in capital gains taxation.

Is there a similar clip on CBC somwhere?

Worth noting there will be another CPI release (May 21) before the next Bank of Canada policy rate decision (June 5).

For the second month in a row, annualised CPI inflation rates at horizons of 12 months and less are all in the Bank of Canada's target range.

Annualised inflation over the last 3 months was just barely over the 1% lower threshold.

Most non-economists and all Marxist economists, bless ‘em, believe in the “labor theory of value.” You do, probably. Bless you also.

My latest column for Folha de S.Paulo.

Is anyone reading the Bank of Canada's policy rate announcement and interpreting it as a signal that it's preparing the ground for a rate cut in June?

Because that's not how I read it.
