The changes are based on deterrence, an approach proven to be both ineffective and abusive.

The bodies of 12 migrants were recovered by coastguards in the Mediterranean yesterday, following shipwrecks near the Greek island of Chios and the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Among those killed were at least four young girls.

Just landed in Malta as a member of the Coalition for the El Hiblu 3 campaign. Yesterday, only a few miles from here, a girl and eight adults drowned in yet another shipwreck. Meanwhile, in Brussels, a migration pact was agreed that makes these atrocities even more likely in the future.

The European Parliament vote today in favor of the Migration and Asylum Pact represents in a new low for the EU. How can anyone take seriously EU pledges on human rights when it celebrates denying people asylum, endorsing pushbacks, locking people up, and shirking its responsibilities?
