This was a wake-up call about their patients' fatal opioid overdoses from LA County medical examiners to opioid prescribers. Providing 'guidance' on pain management from medical examiners is a separate issue in itself, but also helped reduce opioid…

I see the National Director of the U.S. Pain Foundation has joined the rally.

I'll just leave the U.S. Senate's Homeland Security & Govt. Affairs Committee — Dems report here:

I think Brandeis University should be proud to have on faculty someone like Andrew Kolodny, a person who for more than a decade has 'fought the good fight' despite unrelenting personal attacks.

Andrew, thank you. And please keep it up.

'Trapped on opioids? Really?'

Yes, really. We have to stop creating legions of people who are just a few missed doses away from the misery of opioid withdrawal.

Consider Travis Rieder's experience tapering after just two months of opioids.

Now this won't magically 'solve the opioid crisis.' People already addicted need different interventions.

The goal of stewardship is to harm fewer people with the drugs.

- putting fewer excess tablets into circulation
- leaving fewer chronic pain patients trapped on opioids

That means prescribing them more cautiously, including ...

- not using them first line
- not giving 30 tablets when 12 will do
- avoiding “dose creep” whenever possible
- starting them much less often for chronic pain

In other words, opioid stewardship.

Andrew played a key role in promoting this difficult but much-needed change.

In 2010, he founded PROP (@SupportPROP) — Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing.

What PROP would like is for opioids to be prescribed in line with the evidence.

The protesters are angry because over the last decade, doctors have curtailed opioid prescribing significantly.

We aren’t doling them out like candy as we did 10 or 15 years ago.

(And believe me, that is a good thing.)
