Last fall, visual artist Adam Davis captured tintype photos of the descendants of Africatown during the premiere of the Higher Ground documentary Descendant. He recently took one of me, too. These photos were inspired by the images taken of a Clotilda survivor, Cudjoe Lewis.

2053, Seattle. It's illegal for anyone to partake in cuisine that doesn't match the color of their skin. Africans in Africatown only eat Jollof Rice and Fufu. Orientals stay in Lil Orient, surviving on JollyBee and Sushi.
Cultural appropriation, race mixing have been eradicated.

You better don't let this 'historian' Esteban Lucumí see this. Not only does he believe that Oranmiyan never existed, he also says Cudjoe Lewis and the other Yorubas on the Clotilda slave ship who founded Africatown in Alabama were Efik, despite the facts on ground😅😅😅

I had the privilege of heading to Africatown, AL (some of you may know of it from the Netflix doc Descendant) to support the Fall into Good Health Fair led by Rochelle. I learned so much about the history, community, and people in Africatown and Mobile!

Miraculously surviving the journey, Cudjo arrived in the United States and was enslaved in Alabama. After emancipation, he, along with other freed Africans, founded Africatown, a community preserving their heritage and culture in the face of adversity.

If you are ever in Mobile AL, be sure to visit the Clotilda Exhibit clotilda.com/visit-us/?amp=1 in Africatown. And they even have a former Rosenwald school that still functions as a school to this day! I was most definitely Edu-fangirling! Because of them, I shall do all the things!

It is with deep sadness that we are mourning the loss of Elijah Lewis. Elijah was committed to the community in so many ways, whether in his work with Africatown, Ethereal Vision, or teaching financial literacy to the youth at RBAC.

You will be missed Elijah. Rest in peace.
