Today is the last day to respond to the 2022 Census of Agriculture online (agcounts.usda.gov) or by mail. It's so important for producers to respond because the #AgCensus provides the only source of uniform, comprehensive & impartial ag data for every county in the nation.

New findings from the #AgCensus and the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) data on the prevalence of cover crop use and grazing/harvesting on cattle operations. The report examines the potential for increased adoption of cover crops on cattle operations.

New and beginning producers account for 20,378 of all farmers. The largest number of beginning farmers are in Rockingham and Loudoun counties.

In 2022, there were 296,480 U.S. producers under the age of 35 (young producers), accounting for 9% of the country’s 3.37 million producers. Eighty-one percent of young producers started farming in the last 10 years. More in our new Highlights: nass.usda.gov/Publications/H… #AgCensus

While the overall number of agricultural producers in Virginia has dropped in recent years, 40,327 farmers hold other jobs as primary occupations. Farming is the primary occupation for 27,471 producers.

According to the recently released 2022 Census of Agriculture data, Virginia is trending with the nation in terms of fewer farms and less farm acreage than in 2017, when the previous census was conducted.

Yesterday, Dept. of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service released NEW #AgCensus data. The census looks at land use and ownership, producer characteristics, production practices, income, and expenditures. Surveys were collected from farmers between 11/22-5/23.
