¡Buenas tardes! Esta semana os presentamos un nuevo diagrama; quizá, el más afamado dentro de todo el repertorio medieval: el denominado 'Diagrama de los cuatro físicos y fisiológicos'.
Primero hablemos de su autor: Byrhtferth (ob. 1020), monje anglosajón de la abadía de Ramsey.

A little over a thousand years ago, Byrhtferth of Ramsey made a diagram connecting the four elements, four seasons, four wind directions, four ages of man, four humours, the twelve months and the zodiac signs .

The paragraph mark, according to Byrhtferth of Ramsey (c.970-c.1020):
Paragriphus ys þus amearcod .Γ. 7 oft mid þissum tacne man totwæmð mislice gesetnyssa.
[Parahraphos is marked thus Γ and often one divides various writings with this mark.]

The Old English word for equinox is 'emniht', from efen + niht, when night and day are evenly balanced. Today is the 'hærfestlice emniht', autumnal equinox; after this (as Byrhtferth of Ramsey puts it) 'langað seo niht and wanað se dæg', 'the night lengthens and the day wanes'...
