CCIA's Jonathan McHale tells CA lawmakers the idea that news snippets & links shared online should generate a claim of compensation “upends long-standing international copyright law” & “points a dagger at the very nature of the internet as an information-sharing ecosystem.”

Efforts to force digital platforms to pay to link to news content continue—but as a vote for the approaches, Google's move to simply not link to sites is being labeled 'possibly illegal' by bill supporters. Read the latest from Lisa H. Macpherson:

Let's say the CJPA passes, right? Yay! Journalism has been 'protected'! 🥳 Honestly, is anyone on earth working on the front lines of this exhausting business so naive to think the 'link taxes' vacuumed up by Alden are going to be reinvested in newsrooms? 4/

Transparency disclosure: I declined the usual fee for opinion writers because I don’t take any money from the publishers (or my own union) advocating around CJPA, I’m being a hater purely for the love of the game.

Unfortunately, California's news link tax (CJPA) is still alive - despite the disastrous results of Canada's link tax.

Google rolling out a test this morning of life under CJPA, with removed links to CA news sites.

Also pausing investments in CA news.

In opposition to the CJPA, Google is testing the removal of links to California news sites from its search results for a small percentage of its users. The CJPA would require tech companies to pay news publishers for using their content.

I find it super ironic that Canadian media is here championing CJPA as if the Canada / news relationship isn't an absolute raging dumpster fire as we speak.
