Notable that the USAO is taking their <7 cases per month in 'Project Safe Neighborhood' cases as an excuse to take a media victory lap.

In reality this is a drop in the bucket compared to the size of DC gun violence problem.

For people asking 'what can I do?' to drive down crime one clear action is working to get more cameras installed and integrated with MPD's Real Time Crime Center.

Reminder for DC Media: It's been almost 3 months since the DOJ announced a 'Surge of Resources' to DC.

It's probably time for a press conference on what they're actually doing/have accomplished. Preferably with real data, not just buzzwords.

The USAO took a victory lap to brag about charging 127 firearms cases in District Court over the last 2 years.

In 2022 & 2023 they DECLINED to prosecute 1,288 CPWL cases.

Over 10 declinations for every 1 District Court case but they're celebrating.

Note how with technology MPD was able to make an arrest the same day as this alleged shooting.

That is the kind of 'swift and certain' consequences (if the USAO presses charges) that help deter more shootings.

MPD has over 350 cameras and plans to 'reach 1,025 cameras in 2028.'

If we know where & how we'd use these cameras already this seems like an investment worth front-loading in the capital budget.

Cameras & LPRs are critical to solving so many crimes.

The USAO charged 842 new cases in DC Superior Court last month:
- Up 9% from February
- Still less than the volume in September 2023 as they scrambled to close out FY 2023; before the DOJ 'surge' of resources to DC
- Down 35% from the FY 2014-2017 average

USAO: No prior charges in DC Superior Court in the last 6 years

Last year the USAO declined to prosecute 43% of all arrests for theft.

Their failure to enforce the law has encouraged more crime.

Among the many reasons to vigorously prosecute people for driving stolen cars (UUV) is that the market for stolen cars directly encourages more carjackings.

This indictment alleges how these carjackers would use stolen cars both for more crimes & selling them cash.

This suspect in a shooting was driving in a vehicle with over $8,000 in unpaid traffic violations (mostly for speeding) and an expired temporary tag.

The shooting appears to be the result of an argument between neighbors escalating into stupid criminality.

We'll never know how much of our gun violence problem stems from people who should be behind bars but got away with previous crimes because evidence wasn't tested.

The crime lab says they've uploaded 140 CODIS cases this year but they earlier reported a backlog of over 1,100.

Washington, DC, crime has turned it into a war zone with shootings happening every week in what were once-safe neighborhoods. It is a sad turn of events.
