New paper: Fully protected areas that are large and cover whole reefs provide conservation benefits for reef sharks🦈 Benefits DOUBLE when embedded within areas of effective fisheries management‼️

This 'mixed management' approach boosts global conservation of elasmobranchs🦈

Eagle Rays have specialized dental plates called 'cetotrichia' that they use to crush and eat their prey, which often includes mollusks and crustaceans.

These dental plates are unique to eagle rays among elasmobranchs (the group that includes sharks and rays).

Happy 🦈

Scotland’s inshore seas have some incredible elasmobranchs, such as dogfish, flapper skates, and basking sharks.

Take action to help protect the habitats they call home 👉 ourseas.scot/help

World Whale Shark Day 🦈

A day to celebrate the biggest fish in the oceans, these enigmatic elasmobranchs are true gentle giants.

It is always a special feeling when you see those iconic spots appear from the deep.

Reposting the giant peacock bass for the theme of best freshwater fish. While I think catfish and river elasmobranchs are still better, the Tucunaré-açú is still high up in my list.

Did you know that sharks and rays are related?

Both are elasmobranchs, a subclass of fishes that have skeletons made of cartilage.

Random Fact of the Day:
Sharks are elasmobranchs which means they have skeletons made primarily of cartilage rather than bone. Cartilage is a lighter, more flexible tissue and this adaptation helps them be more agile and buoyant in the water.
