Alcohol wasn't mentioned once - not even once.

As PM Anthony Albanese addressed the country on the steps National Cabinet agreed to take to combat gender-based violence, alcohol's role in fuelling violence against women and children was again ignored.

The silence was deafening.

After this morning’s National Cabinet meeting, it’s clear to see there's a deafening silence on alcohol’s role in fuelling violence against women and children.

Meetings don't save lives. National conversations don't save lives. Structural prevention does. fare.org.au/alcohols-role-…

Our community has spoken.

It’s clear they want our nation’s leaders to do more to tackle men’s violence against women and children.

We know there are clear links between family violence and alcohol - it’s involved in up to 65% of police-reported incidents.

Australian Federal, state & territory governments need to listen to the voices of women & children who have experienced alcohol as a driver of violence.😕
Until this is managed & the victims are cared for, a huge part of the problem won't be solved.
Ask FARE for help.

FARE I want the same laws to apply to violent men as this. Locking up kids who are a threat while we bail abusers.

Thanks to FARE for pointing this out.

It's very important and accurate, even if it might be hard for some in an alcohol-loving country to want to face.

Intoxicated & hung-over people can be very moody and intolerant, and some become violent.

The marginalisation of FARE and alcohol regulation in efforts to prevent violence against women flies in the face of all the evidence. Here is a list of practical suggestions to improve women’s and children’s safety ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Governments have committed to keep meeting and strengthen prevention efforts through targeted, evidence-based approaches.

We will continue to advocate for action on addressing alcohol’s role in violence to be part of the conversation, given the significant evidence base.

Today was an opportunity for our nation’s leaders to recognise how the commercial determinants of family violence, including harmful industries like alcohol, fuel men’s violent behaviours.

We know up to 65% of family violence incidents reported to police involve alcohol.

💧Michael West 'In a recent open letter to National Cabinet, FARE also said “addressing predatory and high-risk marketing that pushes bulk alcohol sales, including data-driven marketing,” was an essential part of preventing violence against women and children.'

When alcohol is delivered to homes within 20 mins, any time of day or night without the proper checks, families are at greater risk.

That’s why we'll continue to call on governments to ensure that women and children with experiences of alcohol as a driver of violence are heard.
