Alcohol wasn't mentioned once - not even once.

As PM Anthony Albanese addressed the country on the steps National Cabinet agreed to take to combat gender-based violence, alcohol's role in fuelling violence against women and children was again ignored.

The silence was deafening.

There is an urgent for action to address men’s violence against women - and that must include action on alcohol use.

Australian Federal, state & territory governments need to listen to the voices of women & children who have experienced alcohol as a driver of violence.😕

It's very important and accurate, even if it might be hard for some in an alcohol-loving country to want to face.

Intoxicated & hung-over people can be very moody and intolerant, and some become violent.

Governments have committed to keep meeting and strengthen prevention efforts through targeted, evidence-based approaches.

We will continue to advocate for action on addressing alcohol’s role in violence to be part of the conversation, given the significant evidence base.

Today was an opportunity for our nation’s leaders to recognise how the commercial determinants of family violence, including harmful industries like alcohol, fuel men’s violent behaviours.

We know up to 65% of family violence incidents reported to police involve alcohol.
