Four days will quickly steep themselves in night;
Four nights will quickly dream away the time:
And then the moon – like to a silver bow
New-bent in heaven – shall behold the night
Of our solemnities.
-Shakespeare,
A Midsummer Night's Dream

Nocturnal mystery is embodied by our closest heavenly body, the moon. In Welsh Marches lore, the first new moon of the year provided the best time for divination, with the amount of moons seen when peering through a handkerchief indicating the years till marriage

The Irish for moon is 'Gealach' The Celts likened the Waxing moon to youth and vigour, hence any business or work undertaken during the Waxing moon would be successful.

Freyja - Norse goddess of love, war, and witchcraft - was strongly linked to cats; they pulled her chariot. But the link wasn't totally benevolent. Freyja's gloves and the bag for her witch's tools were made out of catskin, and many Norse witches emulated her.

Another Bavarian folktale:
There used to be a small cottage outside a village in the mountains. Things were often not quite right there. Once, on Walpurgis Night, a young lad passed by it.

The Greek historian Herodotus first saw domesticated cats in Egypt. He wrote that killing cats was forbidden & when cats died their family shaved their eyebrows in grief. Some took their cats to be buried in the city of Bubastis, sacred to a cat goddess.

'The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter' is one of Japan's oldest surviving folktales. By the end of the story, it is revealed that its central character, Kaguya-hime, is actually a princess from the moon who had been sent to live on earth as a punishment.

The Deadly Nightshade is said to belong to the devil. A favourite plant, he supposedly cared for it himself. You might gather it on Walpurgis Night when the devil is busy, but he’ll leave behind a demon guard which you can only distract with a gift of bread. πŸ‘ΏπŸž
