One of few Romano-Egyptian mummy portraits still with its original mummy and shroud. The portrait of Herakleides blends Egyptian, Ptolemaic Greek, and Roman artistic styles. Look at the painterly cross-hatching on the skin (cold encaustic technique?). 1/

Starting from the bust housed in the Getty Villa in Malibu, we wanted to represent Tiberius as a mature middle-aged man as he was when he ascended the imperial throne in 14 AD.

This grotesque fella is a bronze balsamarium (oil jar) in the shape of a boxer’s head. Note the broken, swollen nose, fat lips, and broken teeth. Those teeth - and his eyes - were inlaid with silver, and a handle was attached to those holes on his cap. 1/

This portrait of Ptolemy IX of Egypt is a prime example of iconoclasm. In Egypt, statues were worshipped and offerings of food and wine were ‘consumed’. By defacing the eyes, nose, and mouth, he was effectively blinded, could not breathe, could not eat.

To design our first Mad Emperor, Tiberius, we have been inspired by the bust of the second emperor of Rome housed in the Getty Villa in Malibu (CA).
