It was a delight to talk with Dr. Brian Druker, recipient of the 2023 Stanford Drug Discovery Symposium ( #sdds2023 ) Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Druker developed imatinib ((also known as “Gleevec” or “Glivec”) for CML and as a paradigm of targeted cancer therapies.

When I was 37 years old, I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloma Leukemia (CML) and given 3 years to live. This April, I celebrate my 67th birthday, thanks to the phase 1 Gleevec clinical trial.

Great to hear from OHSU Knight Cancer Institute one and only Dr. Brian Druker on his inspiring, and not so straightforward journey to bringing #Gleevec to patients with CML. Strong message of persistence and “laser focus” will help translate lessons learned from Imatinib development to #HNSCs .
