This indicator evaluates distribution of the ringed seal in the Baltic Sea. Good Environmental Status is not achieved, likely due to declining ice fields for breeding.

Indicator of the week: Radioactive substances

This indicator evaluates concentrations of radioactive isotope caesium-137. The evaluation shows levels have decreased significantly, indicating Good Environmental Status.

Human activities are leading to a decline in the Baltic Sea biodiversity says HELCOM - the Helsinki Commission #HOLAS3 report. And it is affecting the profitability of fisheries and tourism. Assesment work was a great collaboration from different disciplines, also @LukeFinlandInt researchers involved

The poor state of the #BalticSea & the important #HOLAS3 are getting international attention - good!

The impact of eutrophication, unsustainable fishing, hazardous substances & climate change etc should be a warning sign to other seascapes in the world.
