Margaret Clap was a fearless ally in 1720s London. She provided a safe haven at her husband’s house in Holborn, for gay men to escape the harsh realities of the Buggery Act, which criminalised gay sexual activity under penalty of death.

The stone was unveiled by humanist composer and pacifist Michael Tippett. A lifelong pacifist and a conscientious objector during the war, Tippett spent two months in prison for civil disobedience in 1943.
