What are the Tasmantid Seamounts and why are they important? Take a quick (and beautiful) tour to learn why seabirds, turtles, and more depend on these spectacular features in the latest #IceAgeGBR expedition update. Full video: schmidtocean.org/cruise-log-pos…
“Whenever you go and map, you find new things… and that’s a really exciting aspect–the serendipitous discoveries are an amazing part of the process. It has been a dream to map this part of the world.” Check out full vid of latest #IceAgeGBR video update: schmidtocean.org/cruise-log-pos…
The first systematic multibeam mapping coverage of the Swain Reef pinnacles in the southern #GreatBarrierReef . This series of drowned reefs, pinnacles+terraces indicate multiple generations of fossil coral reef growth that extend for almost 100 km. #IceAgeGBR #OzOceans2020
How can mapping taking place today reveal clues about the #GreatBarrierReef 's past? How can researchers decipher geologic clues to help us plan for the future? Check out the latest #IceAgeGBR video update for answers. Full video: schmidtocean.org/cruise-log-pos…
A new expedition - Ice Age Geology of the Great Barrier Reef - will begin in a few days! 'The goal is to explore ancient undersea features that formed during last Ice Age, when sea level was almost 120m lower than today.' #IceAgeGBR

Haydn Trounce, Ella Sinclair+Ben Houseman take a break from their research projects during the #IceAgeGBR expedition on R/V Falkor. For these students at the beginning of their research careers, it is an wonderful opportunity to do field research on the #GreatBarrierReef .
During #IceAgeGBR research, the team has found them along the sandy shoals of the Capricorn Channel in the Coral Sea. Finding ooids in such deep water helps the science team to learn about the ancient geological makeup of the Great Barrier Reef. 2/3
Nothing beats a large-scale paper map! Chief Scientist Mardi McNeil w/ Haydn Trounce, Ben Houseman+ Ella Sinclair examine #IceAgeGBR multibeam mapping efforts. Measuring orientation of submerged shorelines+coral reef terraces indicates how/where coastal features have shifted.
'It feels quite historical to be on this journey, part of a greater vision to map the seafloor...see+learn firsthand how cutting-edge bathymetry mapping collaborates w/ science charting new areas of Great Barrier Reef'

'Being on the Falkor as we map ancient reef structures on the Australian continental shelf presents me with an opportunity to examine geological structures formed during the last glacial period.'
