Hydrothermal vent fields are often vibrant oases in stark contrast to barren spaces nearby. Although biomass may be high, biodiversity may be relatively low. This is typical of environments in extreme conditions w/ good & accessible energy (food) supply #MappingGalapagosVents
I finally get to share with the world a bit of the beauty of the Galapagos deep sea coral reefs. This is 'El Cacho de Coral 🥐' AKA 'Croissant'. We got to revisit this site during the #MappingGalapagosVents cruise. What a magnificent place!! 🪸🪸🪸🪸 Schmidt Ocean
Mmkay, I'm done with the break & ready to get back to diving! 👀
In the meantime, here's what I think is a liocranchia reinhardti squid that we saw during Schmidt Ocean dive 613 part 4 ascent. Pinguinos hydrothermal field. #MappingGalapagosVents

The deep sea is awesome! It’s wilder than your wildest dream. It constitutes the majority of this blue planet & it’s unseen processes support life as we know it! 🌎

Santa didn't go down these chimneys!🎅
Black smoker hydrothermal vents seen on #MappingGalapagosVents expedition. Some of these rocky chimneys can rise 50+ meters from the sea floor and grow as fast as 30 centimeters per day.

Star on a Tree? Not quite, but we hope this anemone on a lava pillar still fills you with sea-sonal joy. Seen during the #MappingGalapagosVents expedition, a collaboration w/ Parque Galápagos & Charles Darwin Foundation-Fundación Charles Darwin.
Why am I on a research vessel ⛴️ in the Pacific Ocean? Using InSAS, a new kind of sonar to map the seafloor at ultra fine-scale resolutions for my PhD! ⚒️🔬🌎
