Another fabulous annual session with Chena River!

This year, they taught classic marbling, including patterns like stone and stormont - plus special ones like tiger eye. Check out a demo by current student Fox.

Wishing you all a wonderful from our stacks!

Marbling is a process of floating ink on water thickened with seaweed, leaving a one-of-a-kind design, which became incredibly popular for book endpapers and fore-edges!

Here's some stealth marbling for

The marbling under the gold is most visible when the book is held at an angle, or when the pages are open. This is the first one we've noticed in our collection but for obvious reasons they're hard to spot, so there may be more!

This we're sharing William Blake's 'The Marriage of Heaven and Hell' in a facsimile edition published by the Trianon Press in 1960 for the William Blake Trust. This pattern can be called Octopus or Whirl and was likely not created until the 20th century.
