Busy day church crawling in Norfolk. Was particularly struck by the memorial to Lady Dionis Williamson at Holy Trinity Loddon, Norfolk. d. 1684. Very lifelike.

The Cobb setting in Corsham church is intriguing. You can lots more about it here! Very dusty and grimy, but are the original tinctures intact? churchmonumentssociety.org/monument-of-th…

A recent field trip to Hampshire began in Andover, where I saw this rather splendid survival from the early C17th, wall monument of Richard Venables (d.1621) and his wife. Church rebuilt in 1844, with many monuments etc lost.

A good modern memorial window is always a joy when I am church visiting.

And often the artist responsible in Oxfordshire will be M C Farrar Bell, as here in St Mary's, Great Milton.

He was also a talented designer of postage stamps, and pub signs.

A curious memorial at St Peter’s, Oundle for Martha Kirkham (d 1616)

The Renaissance detailing of columns & strapwork are fine, if a little rustic, but I find the plain, effigy-less black slab a little incongruous 🤔

The churchyard delightfully strewn with buttercups, primroses and lily of the valley, embracing the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Kings Sutton, gave way to a somewhat grim memorial within.

Plaster wall monument in the chancel to Thomas Langton Freke d 1769.
