I have proudly introduced my 76th piece of legislation during the 118th Congress: 'The Flood Insurance Relief Act'

H.R. 8102 provides much-needed tax relief for NFIP & private insurance policyholders across Southwest Florida, the Sunshine State, & the nation.

Oh yeah, probably one of the more praise-worthy moments of US Congress in the last 20 years was killing the NFIP (National Flood Insurance Program).

Look, you want to build a home worth millions of dollars on a beach in Florida, be my guest, but don't be digging in my pockets

Today (April 22) marks 40 days until the start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1.

If you want an active National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy in place by June 1, you've got 10 days to sign-up given the standard 30-day waiting period.

David Sirota NFIP basically subsidizes high risk properties, benefitting the wealthy. Expanding that program would be an absolute disaster. Flood insurance market is bad because government is too involved. They distort the market and drive away competition.

I have spent the past two months jumping through hoops to get my flood insurance policy cancelled. Every time we complete what NFIP says is the last task, they want more documentations. I told my agent today no, I quit. Let it expire on its own. I’m done playing their games. 🙄

Interestingly, I found no relationship between FEMA post-disaster assistance or NFIP payments and excess migration (this definitely warrants more exploration).

There has been a steady decline in the number of active NFIP policies in recent years.

Texas leads the way. Since March 2020, the active policy count has declined by 100,000. With the ongoing population boom, that means an even smaller % of homes with policies.

Renters, be aware! Standard policies skip floods, earthquakes, and sinkholes. Opt for separate coverage through NFIP or add-ons for quake and sinkhole insurance. Pests like bed bugs and cockroaches? Not covered. Know your policy's limits!
