For the first time since British Social Attitudes began in the 1980s, more think that we should change the voting system for the House of Commons than those who think it should be kept as it is.

We have been asking the public in our British Social Attitudes survey if they would like to see more or less government spending on military and defence. A record high of around 2 in 5 want to see more spending.

There has been a dramatic turnaround in views on immigration since 2011.

Support remains strongest among professionals, but all occupational classes take a more positive view on immigration’s impact than 10 years ago – and the gap between them is closing.

Interesting thing about this chart, I think, is how un-polarised views are. Only a minority give blanket approval or disapproval to disruptive protest. Makes legislation difficult. news.sky.com/story/amp/publ…

Abortion rights continue to be a contested issue this election year.

Our British Social Attitudes survey shows the public agrees a woman should be allowed an if she does not wish to have a child; this has been a consistent majority for three decades.

Our appetite for redistributing income has tracked concerns about inequality for 35 years, though at a lower level.

During the pandemic both rose sharply, with support for redistribution nearing 50% - almost as high as in 1989.

As we approach the centrepiece of the Christian year, our data show regular church attendance declining for Roman Catholic and other Christian denominations, but remaining remarkably steady for the Church of England (lockdown may have affected findings in 2020).
