A great example of the value of museum specimens in understanding the impact of the , & the power of art in communicating it.
The collection of Henry David provide a baseline for plant communities 150 years ago. All the ones in blue are declining

Brad Scott NHM Library&Archives Which is btw, a great resource for people like me - who are loving the weird adverts from late 19th - first half of 20th century 📰

Andrea Murphy I recently found a stack from the 1930s, mostly front pages of daily newspapers having articles about ww2 military movements. My bf said it was a thing to post them to flash out spies. They just had to listen in who is repeating the info published on the front page to the enemy

Brad Scott NHM Library&Archives My favourite so far was a bicycle advert that ended up mounted on the sheet with the specimen, because it was inseparable from the plant. I see this sometimes with daffodils and morning glories.

Since I'm sharing my old newspaper snippets on insta, why not here. Vintage adverts are wild, I just can't get enough.
And it is always a good counter argument to the 'back then, things were better' narrative.

Brad Scott NHM Library&Archives Most of these papers are disintegrating as you touch them, but I think most of them can be found digitised in the British Newspaper Archive. britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/?ds_kid=437000…

Ok guys here we go, the Leningrad Seed Bank.

The LSB was started by geneticist Nikolai Vavilov.

Unfortunately Stalin didn't like genetics so he sent Vavilov to a gulag in 1940. Vavilov said 'fuck you, I teach genetics in the gulag' & died there.

That's how this story STARTS

A friendly reminder that great people come from all places. Do not judge people by their origin or place of birth, judge them by their actions that speaks a thousand words.
