NSW Health has issued a warning regarding severe opioid overdoses in the Penrith area in the last month.

Nitazenes are potent synthetic opioids which can be stronger than fentanyl and hundreds of times more potent than heroin.

Nitazenes were developed and tested in the 1950s by pharmaceutical companies, but unlike fentanyl, did not proceed to therapeutic use due to their poor safety profile.Nitazenes have caused increasing deaths in the United Kingdom & the US.
It's more than 500% stronger than heroin.

Nitazene drugs are similar to #opioids such as heroin and morphine but can be several hundred times more potent which makes them deadly.

They are offered for sale via social media including X.

Nitazenes have been found in drug samples related to a cluster of around 20 overdoses reported in Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District. Investigations into these cases are ongoing.

Our investigation found thousands of posts offering deadly drugs known as nitazenes on X and SoundCloud.

After we alerted SoundCloud, it removed the posts and said it was being targeted by 'bad actors'.

X took down hundreds of posts, but many remain.
