Working with project, with Lancaster Environment Centre and PhD student Sophie Mowbray, on Derwent Common today. To reaffirm presence of Mountain Ringlet butterflies, didn’t find them at a few 550m sites but did record over 14 above 600m. Perfect day for it.

Fantastic to learn about mire restoration work on Harford Common from Angelique of Dartmoor National Park Leaky dams: simple structures placed with great care by big diggers to good effect.
A win win for everyone on the common.

A glimpse of our day with commoners in @ShropHillsAONB today, gathering sheep on Clee Liberty Common. Stopping along the way to check patches of sphagnum moss & signs of rare flowers, watch snipe rise, and meet a favourite old oak.

Fab few days in Dales helping Yorkshire Dales National Park & with resurvey of Ian Appleyard's historical territories. Plenty of ouzels about, albeit bit less territorial behaviour than might've expected. Looking fwd to clarifying occupancy further during visit 2.

Dartmoor looking less sunny today - wandering in the fog, through a sea of molinia on Okehampton Common to meet farmers bringing some of their herdwicks in. Visibility just good enough … they’re out there somewhere.
