Before kids engage in a text set, it's helpful to preteach vocabulary. Check out these examples. What other places do you tend to preteach vocabulary?

If there is a gap between students’ instructional reading level & grade level text, DO NOT bring the text down to the students’ level. Bring the students UP to the text level!

Our first ever Summer School College Week was a huge success. Incredibly helpful for our Ss but also helped me understand the language and concepts we need to preteach to help immigrant and first generation students access the college admissions process.

Short-cycle assessment provide information for both Ss and Ts. Errors must be identified and then followed up with corrective instruction. Moving forward knowing that students have not learned certain concepts would not be wise.

Let’s chat about Tier 3 vocabulary: low frequency words that occur within specific domains such as ´molecule’ ‘precipitation’ ‘quadrilateral’. For students requiring extra language support, you can preteach these words and use graphic organizers like EET, VENN, Frayer models.

Well I have had my best ever preteach session with this group of children! They have worked so hard mastering Roman Numerals, I only wanted to go over numbers 1-12, some of what we did was Yr 4 work. They just got it! Parents see if they can catch you out!

Great few days working with Level 1 & 2 ELs. Supporting content and language goals. Preteach vocab for 'Move!', then used leveled text +picture vocabulary and sentence frames. Started with answers like 'It goes' By Friday 'The polar bear can swim in the water.'

I love seeing Tia Biamont, MLS preteach vocabulary before the read aloud! She thinks ahead of time of tricky word meanings and preps the kids with definitions. Vaughn Elementary

Phoneme frames that also indicate the letter shape- a genius way to preteach key vocab and spellings within the learning journey! These Y1 pupils were spying all the things that Timothy could see through his telescope from Shark in the Park 😊

Preteach 3 or 4 words from an easy text with the 7 Steps. Read 3 or 4 sentences & summarize it. They read those aloud with a buddy & summarize. Repeat process. Highlight phonics, pronunciation in Step 5. After 5-8 sentences, they write their verbal summaries, open text. More here
