#OnThisDay 1798 The Sheares Brothers, John and Henry, were hanged, drawn and quartered. John was briefly the leader of the United Irishmen and set the date 23rd May for the start of the Rebellion. The brothers met their fate at the same time on the gallows.

Louis XVI died at the guillotine on 21 Jan 1793. It was Longford-born priest Henry Edgeworth who accompanied King Louis XVI to the scaffold. The King was 38 yrs old. 2 fellow Irishmen were watching the proceedings, Cork-born brothers, Henry and John Sheares.
