1798 The Sheares Brothers, John and Henry, were hanged, drawn and quartered. John was briefly the leader of the United Irishmen and set the date 23rd May for the start of the Rebellion. The brothers met their fate at the same time on the gallows.

14 July 1798: The Patriot brothers John and Henry Sheares were executed OTD. They were members of the Legal Profession & had joined the United Irishmen to fight tyranny and free Ireland from English rule. They were the sons of a wealthy banker.

Louis XVI died at the guillotine on 21 Jan 1793. It was Longford-born priest Henry Edgeworth who accompanied King Louis XVI to the scaffold. The King was 38 yrs old. 2 fellow Irishmen were watching the proceedings, Cork-born brothers, Henry and John Sheares.
