Have been spending a LOT of time looking at the magnificent tympanum at Conques lately, with its spell-binding depiction of the Last Judgement. Although absolutely stunning as it is now, it was once a captivating riot of technicolour 🌈😍

Church of Saint Julian from Mars-sur-Allier in Burgandy. The upper part of it reminds me of the one in Dumbleton, Gloucs.

The fantastic 12thC tympanum at St Edmund's, Egleton is full of character. Two winged creatures (possibly a wyvern and a dragon) support a flower like wheel with horned beastie heads either side.

Terracotta tympanum at the Church of San Rocco, Orvieto. Built in the 1350s the church was once owned by the Company of Strangers, but now seems to be closed for restoration.

I went for a refreshing visit to the 12C St John’s, Elkstone, Gloucestershire and it was as good as ever. For here’s Christ on a cushioned throne with the evangelists’ symbols around him. And superb beakheads.

What to do when a church is locked?

Find a new angle to examine around the door of course; what a handsome underside to the lintel, so elegantly described:

'carved with a row of three-strand guilloche with nailhead along its strands.' [crsbi.ac.uk]

Detail from Romanesque north door arch . Described as 'shuttlecock' are these flies or bees? Bees have always had cultural significance since antiquity. Did the Roman love for bees persist through the Conquest?
