March 23, 1943 | Some 1,700 Sinti and Roma coming from Bialystok placed in barracks 20- 22 in the so-called Gypsy camp (Zigeunerlager) in Birkenau are taken to gas chambers and murdered on suspicion of having typhus.

Less than 9 % of the Roma deported to Auschwitz survived.

Today is Romani Resistance Day, which commemorates the day in 1944 when 6,000 Romani prisoners in the Zigeunerlager at Auschwitz-Birkenau learned that they were all to be gassed, and rose up to fight back with “stones, iron pipes, wood panels, barbed wire [and] smuggled pikes.”
