Some years ago I came across the art of Hubert Duprat, a French artist that, in the 1980’s experimented with !

He raised larvae in aquariums full of gold, turquoise, opal, etc.,which the caddisfly used to build their cases.

Thread time!

if you see a spider face in the wings of this Petrophila moth and Nectopsyche caddisfly, you’re not alone— these are just two of many insects that have evolved to exploit jumping spiders’ facial recognition skills, which means the spiders see a predator or rival here, not prey!

The filtering-feeding net of the caddisfly larvae Neureclipsis bimaculata (Polycentropodidae). This one was approx 80mm in length.

Hello freshwater bug and worm twitter, does anyone know what this guy is? They make tube houses like a caddisfly but have no head capsule or legs so can't be an insect. The cases are made with detritus bits and shrimp eggs (the little tan soccer balls)

I found this little in a stream yesterday. I put my finger down in front of it and it climbed on and began to eclose (emerge) from its exuvia (nymphal exoskeleton) until it was free. It dried off for a few minutes and flew away.

Caddisfly larvae build themselves protective suits of armour out of anything they find in their environment. They're cute little pond creatures. Someone gave them gold and gemstones and they made these :O

I love boring bugs. Brown, gray, blah insects that blend into bark or sand or dirt are always, always amazing up close. This caddisfly was on a pine tree, and all but invisible from a distance. Up close, it's beautifully textured and intricately patterned and flecked with gold.

First Uni practical that’s involved a net, rather than a spreadsheet!
River surveying at Bridge of Allan, where I got my first caddisfly larvae. Monitoring mats helped us to ID flat bodied upwings, blackfly larvae & blue-winged olive.

Look at the incredible, hexagonal construction of this larva case. The larva builds the tube using found materials (in this case, small plant stem fragments), which it bonds together with its own silk secretions.
