The Black-billed Capercaillie ( #BirdsSeenIn2024 ) is a notoriously difficult bird to see but now as they compete with rival males for mating rites they step out-of-the-shadows with immense on-stage presence, demonstrated well by this Mongolian male [BirdingInChina.com].

To photograph capercaillies, you have to be in the hide the night before because they are very shy and cautious. I finally caught a glimpse of this male at 6:50 this morning. He approached my hide very slowly.
