Our paper on the Na-Birch reduction is out in Chemical Science. Although we have already developed a mechano Li-Birch protocol, simply replacing Li with Na does not lead to efficient Birch reductions. The key is the use of D-(+)-glucose as a proton source.

WEAKLY COORDINATING ANIONS: We like BIG ligands! Here is a superbulky R2N(-) ligand. The amine R2NH cannot even be deprotonated with a superbase BuLi/KOtBu! But with Cs metal we managed it. A new halogen-free weakly-coordinating anion???Chemical Science shorturl.at/djmuG
Happy to share our recent work in collaboration with Dipti Gupta at IITB on electrochemical biosensing of phenol. This work is a stepping stone towards development of sensors for xenobiotics pollutants. Kuddos to Subhankar and team! Chemical Science

We show that PXRD data acquired by robots can be matched with crystal structure prediction data, but even for simple compounds (e.g., benzimidazole), the algorithm can identify the wrong structure (table). Suggests we need improvements to sample prep & algorithm Chemical Science
