This is Cornwall Gardens, a quiet tree-lined square in Kensington, London, where Conwell-Evans hosted secret meetings with the German resistance to Hitler and leading British civil servants including Sir Robert Vansittart and Sir Horace Wilson.

Many congratulations to my fellow Oneworld Publications debut author Charles Spicer! , now out in paperback, tells a beautifully crafted and deeply researched story of the ragbag band of society figures turned amateur diplomats who tried to civilise the Nazis & stop war.

For a really good read on British appeasement before WW2, I would highly recommend by Charles Spicer. Some great anecdotes snd characters in a very easy read on a fascinating topic I knew little about. You won’t be disappointed.

is an incredible* historical account by Charles Spicer of the (failed) attempts by British high society to civilise, rather than appease; out now in paperback. To move forward, we must never stop looking back

*an almost-impossible to believe real-life account
