Get a $20 box from aliexpress and replace the shitty steel electrodes with $30 of platinum wire and you get a low-cost gel electrophoresis box for $50. Bio-rad boxes easily go for more than $500 each.

Got a good deal on a used NanoDrop 1000 just to realize the software is only compatible with Windows 7 😬. Workhorse bio lab tools should be as open and well maintained as Linux. #DIYBio problems.

Finally had successful e.coli selection with my old Ampicillin stock. Needed to use >10X the recommended concentration.

Now to find an appropriate selection concentration for my Kanamycin, then I can attempt more transformations.

#DIYbio Antibiotic selection appears to be working from old freezer stocks, but I’ll be making plates and growth media fresh moving forward. Interesting, not all strains seem to have lost all viability after several months at 4C.
