Most apps we consider ‘industry-standard’ are usable only in English. Unsurprisingly so, as they are made by majority EN-speaking teams.

Localisation is always an afterthought. And — for any language with grammar slightly more intricate that English’s — usually sucks anyway,

Slack’s move is not just passively bad though. It deals immediate moral damage as well, as Russian ex-pats trying to gradually transition to using English in their new careers are openly abandoned.

Slack announces they will no longer support the Russian UI language option in their apps.

This could be a cost-cutting measure or a misconceived boycott. Regardless, it is representative of the shameful state of localisation in a lot of mainstream software that gets developed.
