Recording the surviving late mediaeval roof structure above the gatehouse range Robert Brackenbury Hall. Tree-ring dated to 1496-1516, the arch-bracing and windbracing are some of the finest timberwork of the period in the East Midlands.

Probably the last time I’ll be able to take a post-work stroll around this year but I picked the perfect evening for it 😍

Up on (and in) the roofs Robert Brackenbury Hall this afternoon. Concentrating on the c 1500 range in the centre of the photograph. Cranked ties & collars with plain windbraces. Much plainer than the range to the right.

Back Robert Brackenbury Hall today. Finishing off the scaled drawings of the late mediaeval East Range roof structure. Physical evidence suggests this one always had a ceiling so was not intended to be visible from below (unlike the South Range).

Back Robert Brackenbury Hall today to record the East Range. Although the mediaeval roof structure is in one piece the building's interiors have been massively reorganised. Trying to see what the external masonry tells us - evidence for blocked windows & doors.

Its not just vernacular buildings that have timber-framing either. Am currently working with Dr Matt Beresford on recording Robert Brackenbury Hall near Notts. Easily the very best example of a surviving mediaeval roof structure in the county...

Great to get out tonight after a stressful day juggling childcare and work.
Highlight was having a quick stop at Robert Brackenbury.
