🐟 Herring populations were really hammered by overfishing! The science is clear that we must protect spawning grounds - we need a modern to kick start recovery πŸ‘‡

10 years ago Scottish Government commissioned a report that recommended an inshore limit which would secure existing & new jobs as well as huge environmental gains
Scot Gov Marine just ignored it & then Scot Gov Rural had no hope of achieving GES

In , we've been waiting for effective management in Marine Protected Areas for over 10 years; and still, Scottish Government & Scot Gov Marine quibble over the process.

This is why Open Seas challenged them in court.

We need an .

Scallop dredging rips up seabeds, wrecks habitats & harms marine life. It's the most destructive type of fishing - yet it's allowed in >95% of Scotland's seas. It doesn't have to be this way. Sign and share: bit.ly/InshoreLimit

Surely if the Isle of Man Government can do it, it’s time for Scottish Government to reinstate a modernised on trawling and dredging in a fair way that incentivises a transition to low-impact fishing bit.ly/inshorelimit

That means you too, Scottish Government & Scot Gov Marine.

You've been stalling on this for over ten years; you know it must be done - to save 's seas, & coastal communities.

While you're doing that, you can also put in a 5km ; & so reduce carbon dispersal.

What I'd like to know is where were all the defenders of our inshore fishermen 40 years ago, when UK government removed the ban on inshore bottom-trawling which had previously safeguarded local fleets

'Please let us seize this opportunity & see an end to the 'Tragedy of the Commons' where a free-for-all has led to the devastation of our once prolific seas.'

Great read in The Press and Journal from an ex-fisherman on why reinstating the would allow recovery in our seas.

The SNP Scottish Greens Mairi Gougeon Lorna Slater Patrick Harvie πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡ΊπŸŒˆ Ariane Burgess Carbon sinks and habits being blatted, legally, because our politicians just can’t sort out the difference between high and low impact fisheries. It is pathetic and depressing.

It's curious why &
arguably a sign of deep systemic failure that Scot Gov Marine
Scot Gov Rural
Scottish Government
Mairi Gougeon
have never sought to discover or report on why the Clyde's fish populations such as cod
collapsed & haven't recovered

Hint it's not creel fishing!

From to the the story's the same.

We need to end . And we need to start by tackling the methods that do the most damage.

This means taking urgent action to and restore our oceans.

Caroline Lucas Oceana UK Please will you also call for the restoration of an to trawling - as there was until MHT removed it?
This will protect a huge area of the coastal sea bed, allowing the recovery of many species, & increase 'blue carbon' storage.
See Our Seas for more on this.
