Mast cells can be background cells in certain pathologies including

1) Neurofibroma
2) SDH deficient RCC
3) Secretory Meningioma(seen👇)
4) +many more!

This colonic neurofibroma arose in a patient with neurofibromatosis, Type 1 (NF1).

Nicely depicted mast cells in this neurofibroma. Does it look like a fried egg?

Neurofibromatosis type 1 - NF1 (neurofibromin, tumor suppressor) gene mutation affecting nerve cells & cells surrounding nerves (oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells) leading to production of neurofibroma tumors, Lisch nodules, café-au-lait spots, learning disabilities, etc.

Hybrid schwannoma/neurofibroma with plexiform growth pattern.

Tip of the day 💡: Look out for short segment early optic pathway gliomas (red arrow) in the context of a patient with cafe au lait spots. Note also the sphenoid wing dysplasia (yellow arrow) and the faint plexiform peri-orbital neurofibroma. All defining features of NF1.
