Fantastic day at Maths at Bartons Primary School. Loved seeing both Numicon and Number Sense Maths in action. Blown away by the power of manipulatives plus oracy in making children into engaged and confident mathematicians. Louise Pennington FCCT (She/Her) Oxford Primary Will Power Lydia Davison Kate Powell

In Maths we’ve been looking at rotating shapes, we had to find the right shapes and rotate them to make a picture.

We also found some Numicon flowers in our classroom! We had to find the matching Numicon piece and rotate it to fit onto each stem 🌷🔸🔺

This is often an area of maths that children can find confusing.

So we try and tackle that by using:

• Numicon Tiles
• 2 coloured pens

This is one way that we scaffold learning!

Today we enjoyed using Numicon piece and pegs to explore the equivalence of one half and two quarters. We are trying really hard with our work on fractions ☺️

This week we are working on combining numbers to make 9. We have made 'the story of 9' using Cuisenaire rods and 'ninewiches' using Numicon.

What a busy day R3 have had as mathematicians! We have sorted buttons into sets, made Lego number towers and made numicon cities. We sang number songs and even made gingerbread men. We counted the body parts and added our favourite number of buttons. Well done R3!

This week in maths the children are experimenting with their own symbols and marks and we discussed how we could record our findings. They found out how many each numicon represents, found the numeral and wrote it next to it Great Coates Primary

🚌 ✋🏼➗

I was recently asked where changes the game for KS2 chn & division has to be up there!

🪜Accessible for ALL chn
👀Easy to follow
🗣️Promotes collaboration & talk
↗️Progresses to deeper learning (exchanges, remainders)

If division is coming up, give this a try!

This is one of my favourite moments with Numicon! Showing intervals and reminders on a number line ❤️🙌🏻

Also, apologies for the song choice but who doesn’t love a-bit of star girl 🎶

The Busy Bees have loved our Christmas activities, we matched the numicon to the correct elf, decorated our spaghetti and painted the lights onto the string using our fingerprints. 🎄🎅🎨 Emma Hardy Smith @ St.Anne’s Becky Poole
